Funnily enough, in mainstream we were implementing initiative after initiative (i.e. add-ons to the curriculum content) in science to 'teach' critical thinking, analysis skills, research and development type skills - at secondary level...... what I love about Montessori is that from age 3, the child's innate desire to question, experiment, re-question and re-experiment is embraced, actively encouraged and nurtured. I can see why at secondary and tertiary levels these Montessori children are naturally better able to perform these skills and therefore 'outperform' their mainstream peers.
